BUTTERFLIES!!!!

This morning, I came in to get everything ready for our Farm Field Trip, but apparently I have more than 20 students who want to go on the field trip.... two of our butterflies have broken out of their cocoons and I think they might want to go!

The Kindergarteners came in to find the two butterflies. We’ve decided that their wings are not strong enough to go to the farm. We know that it takes a couple hours for their wings to dry. Once they are dry, they flap their wings to get blood flowing in them.

Here are our observations from Day 19:

  • There are still 3 in chrysalis (Kate)
  • 2 of them are butterflies (Layla)
  • The butterflies have black and white spots (Nikos)
  • They look like they have Army colors, like camouflage (Landon)
  • The background of the spots is grey (Peyton)
  • 2 of the chrysalises are yellow (Sophie)
  • Those are the cracked ones! (Landon)
  • The caterpillars still in chrysalis are the same color as the butterflies (Anthony)
  • One of the butterflies is hanging on to a chrysalis right now (Jake)
  • We have not seen the butterflies move yet (Mrs. Roll)
Update! Count the butterflies:
One.
Two.
Three!!!

Did you happen to check out the close-up picture? You can see it’s eyes and special tongue called its proboscis.
