The Very Grouchy Kindergarteners

After reading Eric Carle’s The Grouchy Ladybug, we wrote about what makes us grouchy and happy. After writing, we used the App “ChatterPix” to make a hilarious narration of the times we are grouchy! I bet you can’t keep a grouchy face while watching this silly video!!!

Dr. Seuss’ Birthday with Our Study Buddies

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, earlier this month the Room 1 Kinders met up with their 3rd grade Study Buddies from Mrs. Shen/Mrs. Shaffer’s class. The 3rd Graders read classic Dr. Seuss books to the Kindergarteners. We love our study buddies--- and Dr. Seuss, too!

Birthday girl, Eva, and her study buddy, Sydney.
Roya reading to Sebastian!
Ricky reading Sneetches to Matthew.
Katie & Julia!
Wait! Did they plan this??!! Perfect match for study buddies!
Lexi & Jackson
I love Max’s expression while Chloe reads to him!

After a fun-filled Dr. Seuss-y day, we watched the Cat in the Hat! I love showing classics like this to the kids! They LOVED it!
Finally, we had some 4th grade visitors come and read yet another Dr. Seuss book :)

Transportation Unit

Beep Beep! Honk! Chug-a-chug-a-choo-choo! Mayday!
Check out these super AWESOME vehicles for our Transportation Unit! The kids made each vehicle out of recycled materials using their own imagination. Boy, are they creative! They will be sharing their vehicles all this week.

You probably can’t miss the giant MAP on the wall behind the kids! For the last 3 weeks, we have been adding details to our community map. First, we named the streets (with Sight Words, of course). Then we created buildings for our town --- complete with a Starbucks. Next, we created cars to drive on our streets. Finally, we made our houses for the community map. Maybe you’ll be able to spot your house, car, or place of work!

Letter W & Community Map

Every week, a new letter visits Room 1. Here is who visited today--- Mr. Wonderful Wink!
The kids LOVE to see these silly pictures! Please have them find an item that starts with a W and have them write 3 clues describing it.

Here is a peek at what we have been making during our Transportation & Community Helpers unit. This afternoon, we will be making houses for the neighborhoods of our community. The kids have been working very hard to create buildings and vehicles that are important in our community. I bet you can notice many of the buildings and vehicles!

100th Day of School!

***I'm finally getting caught up with all my posts! Better late than never ;)  **

The 100th Day of School is a special day in Kindergarten. The 100th day not only celebrates completing 100 days of the kids' first year of school, but also celebrates something we had been working towards since day 1--- counting to 100!
We started the morning walking through streamers in to the classroom and then we did this fun activity above. I asked each kid why they would like 100 of and what they would not like 100 of. Look for your child's initials on the left side to see their response.

During our celebration, we had five fun and interactive learning centers. Here's a peek at our day!

At my station, the kids filled in a 100s chart! The kids really impressed me! Prior to this activity, we weighed and compared their 100 items they brought in. They made predictions of which ones weighed the most/least and we used a scale to compare. Some of the items really tricked us!

This was the hit center: building with 100 cups!
I love to see their imagination at work!
The kids also made these cute 100th day crowns as modeled above by Nikos, Jackson and Sebastian.
Finally, there was the trail mix center. These kids were so in to creating a 100 piece trail mix that they probably had no idea how much math they were doing. They had fill 10 "ten frames" with different types of food. Then they counted by tens to 100 and then put it in a baggy. Then they had to sort the trail mix into groups of ten again! So much work but so much fun!!
These kids have grown so much this year and I am soooooo proud of them!!

Community Helper Visit- K9 Unit

On Thursday, Officer Nicolas of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department came with a very special visitor--- K9 Officer "Rene".
Even as an owner of two German Shepherd mixed dogs, I was in awe of how well trained Rene was! Officer Nicolas and Rene demonstrated their calls and some training exercises. The kids also got to pet Rene and take a picture with him!
Officer Nicolas and K9 Rene.
Rene watched his handler's every move!
It's hard to see, but Rene is sitting in the back seat with his toy waiting before the Kindergarteners got to walk around the car.
Room 1 says "Thank you officers Nicolas and K9 Rene!!!"

Community Helper- Airport Fireman

Peyton's dad, Mr. Martino, came to visit us and tell us how he keeps our airports safe. Mr. Martino works at the Camarillo airport as a fireman. He showed us his uniform, his boots that can walk through a super hot fire, and how he can breathe when going in to a fire.

These girls were holding the VERY heavy hose nozzle.
Kate tried on Mr. Martino's jacket!
The kids all got a chance to look inside the truck and listen to the air traffic controllers on the radio!

Thank you, Mr. Martino, for coming to MATES and for keeping our community safe!
