Butterflies

April 5 - We have 5 new additions to Room 1... not two-legged Kindergartners, but the six-legged insect kind.... caterpillars!
Please check back frequently to our blog to see our latest updates on our observations of the caterpillars’ growth, appearance, and any major updates regarding the life cycle of a butterfly! We cannot wait to see them grow into beautiful butterflies!

April 6 - We named our caterpillars this morning! Their names are: Zach, Sparkles, Fuzzy, Shaggy, and Jewel!

Observations:
  • I see caterpillars. (Camryn)
  • I saw one caterpillar that was kind of curled. (Siena)
  • It looks like they are trying to crawl to the top (Cody)
  • They are spiky. (Ava)
  • I saw one eating that brown stuff. (Waylon)
  • Dylan measured the caterpillars and they are 2 cm long.
April 7 - the caterpillars are beginning to shed some of their skin and are already making a lot of growth! They grew half a centimeter in one day! The kids also noticed what looks to be like a web that the steroid lard are crawling on.

April 8 - These caterpillars are growing fast! Ava helped me measure them --- 3 cm! They have grown a full centimeter in two days!

Observations:
  • They are bigger! (Kali)
  • They are getting more spiky. (Carson)
  • Emily noticed that they appear to be shedding.

April 13 - You can’t believe what we saw this morning!

  • They look like a J right now (Eddie)
  • I saw one moving (Noah)

April 15 - Wow! What a week! We didn’t have time to write down observations, but look at our caterpillars! They are in chrysalis now! It is soooo amazing how the caterpillars knew to go hang from the top of the cup and we could see them shaking around which seems to help them transition into chrysalis. When I transported the chrysalises out of the cup and into the butterfly net, some of them were shaking around! So cool and yet quite creepy!

April 18 - Still in chrysalis
Observations:

  • It looks like they are starting to make their way out of their chrysalis (Ava)
  • One part of the caterpillar’s body is not in the chrysalis! He must have shed that part (Auden)
  • Their chrysalis is spiky (Noah)
  • They are almost starting to turn into a butterfly (Cody)
  • They are grey and brown (Dean)
April 19 - Still in chrysalis!

Observations:

  • Their spikes are getting tinier (Jason)
  • They look a little harder. They were furry looking before. (Eddie)
  • I saw one that had orange dots on it (Siena)
April 20- Chrysalis Day 6...

Observations:

  • The spikes are getting smaller (Noah)
  • I think they will be butterflies tomorrow! (Avery)
  • You can almost see their wings (Patrick)
April 21- Chrysalis Day 7...

Observations:

  • It looks like they are hatching a little bit. (Cody)
  • Jason noticed the shed parts of the caterpillars that are not in the chrysalis.
  • Macy noticed that the butterflies inside of the chrysalis seem to be turning orange.
  • Ava noticed that the chrysalis is even less spiky than yesterday.

April 22-

  • Kali saw gold little spots that look like horns!
