Math Rotations

This week we have been focusing on combinations to 5. We learned many new games that the kids in Room 1 would LOVE to play at home!

Here we are playing a fun combinations to 5 card game!

To play this game at home all you will need is a deck of cards. First, remove all of the cards 6-10, Jacks, Queens, and Kings. Keep the Aces, 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, and 5's. Next, you will put 5 cards face up in front of you (just like Layla and Sophie did above). The object of the game is to find 2 cards, when added together, equal 5. Ace+4=5, 2+3=5, etc. Don't forget that 5+0=5, so you don't need to match the 5 with anything. You keep making combinations of 5 until you run out of cards.

You may have noticed that your child has a new piece of jewelry this afternoon! This is out combinations to 5 bracelet. We used to emphasize the addends that equal 5.

Kate is playing another fun game on the iPad. To play this game on your iPad or home computer, go to http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3564

We have also been using our favorite website, www.abcya.com in class. We LOVE the Counting Fish game in the "Numbers" section.
