World Travelers in Room 1

For the last two weeks, the students of Room 1 have been "traveling" to different countries to learn about their holiday traditions. Everyday we "board" the Holiday Express Airlines and "fly" to our destination (Google Earth is AWESOME!).
Here is where we have traveled so far & what we have made:
Germany- Where the tradition of decorating Evergreen Trees and making gingerbread houses comes from.
We made Measurement Trees by ordering strips of green paper from smallest to largest to form a Christmas tree, topped with snow.

Greece- where the tradition of hanging stockings came from.
We made stocking addition problems.

America- where the tradition of reindeer and candy canes came from.
We made these adorable "Reindeer Peek" pieces of art coupled with a description of what the reindeer sees!

More Greek stockings hung by the fire.

Mexico- where the tradition of the poinsettia came from.
We made beautiful poinsettias out of construction paper topped with glitter.

We have also been completing a travel log about what we learned, coloring the map and flag of the countries we've visited so far, and are loading many more fun projects in our "suitcases" that will be coming home next week! Also next week, we will be visiting Israel and England to learn about their holiday traditions.

We hope you can join us to see our classroom and to help celebrate one of Germany's traditions, decorating gingerbread houses, on Friday, December 19th from 8:30-9:30 in Room 1!

A Peek into "Daily 4"

A few times a week, we do reading rotations called Daily 4. Here is a peek at what those look like and consist of!
Building words (sometimes on the iPad... so fun!)
Doing Sorts
Short i/Long i Sort
Reading books!
Decoding words

and Writing Sentences
Jackson: "I like to play video games and play in the snow."
Julia: "I like to go ice skating and decorate for Christmas."
Peyton: "I like to see my nana and Romeo."
Layla: "I like to dance."

Math Rotations

This week we have been focusing on combinations to 5. We learned many new games that the kids in Room 1 would LOVE to play at home!

Here we are playing a fun combinations to 5 card game!

To play this game at home all you will need is a deck of cards. First, remove all of the cards 6-10, Jacks, Queens, and Kings. Keep the Aces, 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, and 5's. Next, you will put 5 cards face up in front of you (just like Layla and Sophie did above). The object of the game is to find 2 cards, when added together, equal 5. Ace+4=5, 2+3=5, etc. Don't forget that 5+0=5, so you don't need to match the 5 with anything. You keep making combinations of 5 until you run out of cards.

You may have noticed that your child has a new piece of jewelry this afternoon! This is out combinations to 5 bracelet. We used to emphasize the addends that equal 5.

Kate is playing another fun game on the iPad. To play this game on your iPad or home computer, go to http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3564

We have also been using our favorite website, www.abcya.com in class. We LOVE the Counting Fish game in the "Numbers" section.

Making Snowflakes

Room 1 is turning in to a Winter Wonderland! For the next few weeks we will be "traveling" to different countries to learn about their holiday traditions. This week we traveled to Germany aboard the Holiday Express Airlines. The students have suitcases and boarding passes! Every group also got a chance to take a "road trip" in America as we made reindeer *** pictures to come!

Today, we decorate the GIANT black wall with snowflakes made out of coffee filters. These came out AMAZING!!!
Patiently wait for everyone to flatten out their coffee filters. Some waited longer than others! :)

Folding them into a "taco" shape.
Cutting time!!! Matthew was very eager to get started.
Impulsive Puppy assisted Peyton in making hers!
Nikos, getting to work!
And the finished result.... MAGICAL!
