Hello Room 1 Families,
The students in Room 1 have been working SO hard the last few weeks! The amount of Legos in the Lego Jar, our classroom incentive jar, is almost full for the THIRD time already! The kids are really getting into the swing of our daily schedules and rotating during our learning centers. We went to our first Art class this week, had PE, Music, and Computers, too! We will go to our first dance class next Friday.
Over the last few weeks, we have learned about colors and shapes. We created color books for every color we learned, as well as made our own version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, Jr. We have those books stored in each student’s individual “Book Bag” that they can read whenever they have time after they finish their work. The kids are practicing using their “reading finger” as they read our latest sight words (I, a, see) as well as the color words.
Here are some pictures of just a small bit of all of the projects we have done with COLORS:
Beautiful rainbow tear art mosaics! These are one of my favorite projects :)
Fun colorful spirals hanging from the ceiling!
The kids also practiced sorting colors on a iTable! The kids LOVED it! Sorry, I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of that.
We have also been practicing writing our names with many different art mediums. Here we did tempura paint dot art with Q-tips! Such a great activity both for name practice and to strengthen their fine motor skills!
This week, we learned about different shapes and how to describe them. We talked about how many sides and corners each of the shape has (or doesn’t have if its a circle!).
Aren’t these shape monsters the cutest? Each child got to choose their favorite shape and color for their monster’s body. From there, they used a “Monster Glyph” to tell them how many eyes they could put depending on their favorite shape as well as what type of mouth they should have depending on if they are a boy or a girl. Finally, they added their own details including hair, teeth, and long legs (which are surprisingly difficult for 5 year olds to make). They look awesome!
The letter of the week was S this week. Every week, we do many activities surrounding our letter and sight words. Many of the activities are games or projects that we keep at school, but I wanted to give you an idea of all of the weekly activities we do:
- practice writing the letter
- use iPads to trace the letter
- write in journals using the new sight words
- make our own Dictionary pages
- share Mystery Bags (Great job on those!!!)
- play games with the letter/sounds
- write sentences (yes, sentences!) using the sight words
- sing songs with the letter of the week
- read poems with the letter of the week
After the students shared their Mystery Bag item, we sounded each out! It’s so fun to spell phonetically! And, of course, I have to attempt to draw each - HA!
Here are some examples of our Dictionary pages! Some students used the examples on the board and some even tried sounding out some of the words on their own.
Great job Superstar Students!
Have a wonderful weekend :)
